“Reflect on all interactions and support your military leaders gave you and all situations that you had to use interpersonal skills. There are so many skills outside of technical skills that the military gives you.”
Stephen, a global environment health & safety leader for our Electrical & Fastening Solutions business segment in Houston, Texas, shared his journey from the United States Air Force to a thriving career at nVent, highlighting the invaluable skills and experiences veterans contribute.
His military career began as a heavy equipment mechanic (MOS 4T351). Reflecting on his service, he notes, “My time in the military showed me strong leadership, team principles, and that hard work leads to promotion and recognition.” These foundational lessons have been instrumental in his civilian career, particularly at nVent, where he chose to return after some time away. “I wanted to come back to a strong company to finish my career,” he noted. Previously, he had spent four years with our organization.
For Stephen, the transition from the military to a civilian work wasn’t just about applying technical skills but also about using the interpersonal abilities honed during his service. “I learned that all voices count and to not let titles affect how you treat people.” He inspires others by maintaining a positive outlook and ensuring that diverse perspectives are heard.
At nVent, Stephen has found a workplace culture that resonates with his personal values. “Our Win Right values of Respect and Teamwork, along with Innovation and Adaptability, are strong drivers in my day-to-day function,” he explained. These underlying values create an environment that fosters growth and development, with leaders who challenge employees to be their best while providing the necessary support and resources to assist them.
Stephen has been particularly impressed by nVent’s commitment to veterans and an inclusive culture that offers tremendous encouragement. “In the time that I have been here, I have seen a great focus and attention to the veteran community,” he shared. “The support and inclusion into this community has been very strong for me…greater than most companies that I have worked for.”
For veterans considering a career transition, Stephen offers this advice: “Reflect on all interactions and support your military leaders gave you and all situations that you had to use interpersonal skills,” he emphasized. “There are so many skills outside of technical skills that the military gives you.” He believes this is an important first step toward making meaningful contributions in a civilian role.
Stephen’s journey is a testament to the valuable skills veterans bring to our workforce. We pride ourselves on not only recognizing these skills, but also celebrating them. We work hard to create an environment where veterans can thrive. Our teammates are accepted and appreciated for the unique qualities they bring as individuals. For those looking to make a similar transition, Stephen’s story serves as both inspiration and a reminder of the enduring impact of military service on personal and professional growth.
